Scientific Lead, Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, Canada

Sören Mindermann works at Mila under the supervision of Yoshua Bengio. He is currently the Scientific Lead of the first International AI Safety Report, a project supported by 33 nations and intergovernmental organisations.
His research in machine learning spans risk management, LLM honesty, health applications, and data selection for large-scale deep learning. In these areas, his lead-author publications have been featured on television and in outlets such as The Guardian and Time, while others have been discussed by government ministers or incorporated into national legislation.
Before joining Mila, he completed a PhD in machine learning at the University of Oxford under Yarin Gal, funded by Google DeepMind. He has also worked on learning human preferences and game-theoretical machine learning with David Duvenaud and Roger Grosse at Toronto’s Vector Institute and UC Berkeley, as well as with the Centre for the Governance of AI at Oxford. He studied machine learning at UCL, mathematics at the University of Amsterdam, and Future Planet Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
