26 April 2025
Chief Executive Officer, Transluce, US

Jacob Steinhardt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics and Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on ensuring that machine learning systems are reliable, aligned with human intent, and safe to deploy. More broadly, he is interested in the role of algorithms and complexity in social systems.
Steinhardt completed his PhD in Computer Science at Stanford University, advised by Percy Liang. He was previously a Research Scientist at OpenAI, a Fellow at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), and an undergraduate at MIT. He has also helped to organize workshops and reading groups on AI alignment and safety.
In addition to his academic work, Steinhardt is the Co-founder and CEO of Transluce, a nonprofit AI research lab launched in October 2024. Transluce develops open-source, scalable tools to analyze and interpret the internal workings of frontier AI systems, aiming to make their behavior more transparent and steerable. Under his leadership, the lab has introduced technologies like Monitor, an AI-driven observability interface that helps users understand and guide the internal computations of large language models. Transluce collaborates with academia, industry, and government to establish public standards for trustworthy AI deployment.
